August 2, 2006 00:48 - Coaches game features two highway players

By Bill Peterson The first football game of the year in Texas is in the books. No one's asking or trying to find out who won. All that matters is that a game has been played.
The Texas High School Coaches Association, conducting its annual convention in Austin, put on its annual all-star game of departed seniors Tuesday night at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, pitting the North against the South. Two athletes from along IH-35 in Hays County helped to ring in the occasion.
Jacob Posey, a decorated center for the Hays Rebels last year, played for the North squad, while San Marcos running back Jordan Walker played for the South. Posey will attend Texas A&M, while Walker is on his way to Cisco Junior College.
With that done, the real teams will convene next week. Most of the high school and college teams begin practice on Aug. 7, including the teams at Hays, Lehman and San Marcos High Schools. The first of those schools to play a game will be Lehman, which kicks off for the first time ever as a varsity team on Sept. 1 against Johnston at Bob Shelton Stadium. The Hays Rebels and San Marcos Rattlers will begin their seasons one week later.

August 3, 2006 19:29 - What Texas State might anticipate

By Bill Peterson The Texas State Bobcats will begin their 2006 season Monday with their first workouts. Judging from the Tuesday night's Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game, they might have a bit to anticipate.
Running back Andre McCorkle, by consensus the best offensive player among the Corpus Christi area high schools last year, made ESPN SportsCenter's top ten plays of the day for turning a short pass reception into a 62-yard touchdown, helping the South to a 30-20 win against the North.
McCorkle rushed for 1,978 yards last year at Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, averaging 11.6 yards per carry and scoring 23 touchdowns. Though McCorkle runs into a deep tailback situation at Texas State, an explosive skill player can make an early impact at the collegiate level.
Another Texas State recruit, defensive lineman Travis Houston from Converse Judson, also played in the coaches’ game. However, Houston weighs in at only 216 pounds, which means he won't be anywhere the line of scrimmage this season. He'll either have to add about 50 pounds through time, or add 25 and switch to linebacker, if he's got the speed.
Though the Southland Conference coaches see McNeese State edging ahead of Texas State for the league title this year, the Bobcats put three players on the league's preseason First Team.
The best news is that two of them are defensive backs. Cornerback Walter Musgrove made all-conference last year. Of even greater interest, he was named 2005 Intern of the Year by the state comptroller's office after working on the development of a database of Texas county and city tax files. The other defensive back honored preseason is strong safety Gary Shepard. Offensive lineman Ryne Miller also made the preseason First Team.
