April 4, 2008 23:37 - Doyle reaches 13 feet
The Hays Highway
Hays High School senior pole vaulter Jessica Doyle became the fourth high school girl in Texas history to reach 13 feet Friday at the District 26-4A championships in San Antonio.
The first Texas girl to make it, former Hays pole vaulter Britni Lawrence, coached Doyle at the meet. Lawrence made the mark in 2003, but pulled hard for Doyle to break it, figuring it's as good to coach the record as to hold it.
Instead, good friends Lawrence and Doyle share the record, which isn't the only thing they share. Both are Texas high school state champions in the pole vault. Lawrence won it in 2002 and Doyle won the championship in Class 4A last year.
Lawrence went on to vault for a year at Texas Tech before transferring to Texas State. However, foot fractures that began to hamper her in high school kept her from competing for the duration of her college years.
Doyle has signed a letter of intent to pole vault at the University of Texas. Doyle's state title as a junior last year came as no surprise, since her vault of 12 feet, eight inches entering the meet was the best in the state. Doyle topped that at the state meet, going 12-9.
Now that Doyle has hit 13 feet, the state record is within her reach. Generally, the University Interscholastic League recognizes state records only if they occur at the state meet. Next up for Doyle is the Region IV meet in San Antonio, followed by the state meet in May.
Once Doyle made 13 feet Friday, meet officials raised the bar a quarter of an inch to see if she could go over, but Doyle nudged the bar on all three attempts. However, she has two meets left in her high school career to take the record for herself.

April 6, 2008 22:46 - Rebels rolling on diamond
The Hays Highway
BUDA – The Hays High School baseball team entered this season wondering if it could even approximately replace last year's Friday night pitcher, Michael Rocha, who now pitches on Sundays for the University of Oklahoma as a freshman.
David Casas has answered that question. The answer is, "yes."
Casas pitched another outstanding game Friday night in a 9-0 win against Lockhart last Friday night at Rebel field, striking out ten in six innings. Nick DeSantiago and Clayton Rogers each homered in the game for Hays.
A week earlier, Casas struck out ten in a 3-2 win at New Braunfels Canyon, putting the Rebels and Canyon in a first-place tie for District 26-4A with one loss each.
In four Friday night starts during the district season, Casas has pitched three shutouts and allowed a total of two runs.
Meanwhile, the Hays offense is bludgeoning opponents, scoring 46 runs during the team's active five-game winning streak. The offensive surge comes at an opportune time as the Rebels wind into the back half of their district schedule. The schedule favors Hays by setting up home games against New Braunfels and Canyon.
After starting the season with only five wins in their first 14 games, the Rebels are up to 7-1 in the district and 12-9-1 overall. The Rebels will play at Lehman Tuesday night before taking on New Braunfels at Rebel Field Friday night.
New Braunfels handed Hays its only district loss this year, a 1-0 result that wasted Hays starter Paul Breyfogle's two-hit, ten-strikeout pitching performance.
